Sunrooms Run The Gamut In Styles
Making the decision to add a sunroom onto a house is an excellent way to take advantage of side or backyard space. Selecting the right type to
fit needs and budgets, however, can be a little more difficult than many realize. Sunrooms do run a rather large spectrum as far as styles are
concerned.
There are four basic types of sunrooms that most people end up selecting from. They are:
- Seasonal – This type of sunroom is generally used only in certain times of the year in climates where all four seasons bring weather
changes. They are typically made with single-pane glass windows and/or screens to create the walls. They may or may not have knee-walls to
create a sense of indoors. Seasonal sunrooms are basically covered and walled porches that are not equipped with heating or cooling.
- Conservatories or solariums – This is a rather distinct design as far as sunrooms go. In this type of room, glass walls are utilized to
give users a full view of their surroundings. It is not uncommon for solariums to have heating or cooling for full-time, year-round use.
- Screen rooms – This is a basic patio that has screened in walls to create a barrier between users and insects. These are not meant for
year-round use in climates where winters and late autumn are cold.
- Knee-wall designs – This type of sunroom more closely resembles an addition to a home in many cases. It will feature an actual wall up to
windowsill level. Beyond the windowsills, the sunroom portion of the room will take over offering users a clear view of the outdoors. This
type of room can feature screen or glass walls. In the case of glass, it is common for knee-wall rooms to also feature weatherizing for
year-round enjoyment.
Sunrooms enable people to enjoy the great outdoors without forcing them to get up close and personal with it. The design choices run the range
from basic screened patios to elaborate conservatories that let in the light, but not the bugs.
